  8. What it is

  10. MidiQT™ is a System Extension that enables real-time synthesis of MIDI data using Apple's QuickTime™ 2.0.  Applications such as sequencers that are able to connect to Apple's MIDI Manager can transmit MIDI signals to the  QuickTime 2.0 synthesizer and produce immediate sound output.

  14. (1)  System 7  (7.5 is fine)
  15. (2)  MIDI Manager  (2.0.1 or 2.0.2)
  16. (3)  PatchBay (comes with MIDI Manager)
  17. (4)  QuickTime 2.0 (including "QuickTime™ Musical Instruments")

  19. Note that the file "QuickTime™ Musical Instruments" is not strictly necessary to use MidiQT.  Without it, QuickTime only plays one instrument: an electric piano sound.  With the Musical Instruments file this demo version of MidiQT will play instrument #1 (Acoustic Grand Piano).

  23. Drag the MidiQT icon to the System Folder icon.  MidiQT will be placed in the "Extensions" folder.  Restart your Macintosh.

  25. You may notice an extra hesitation of a few seconds at the end of the startup sequence (just before your Desktop comes to life).  This is normal.  MidiQT is setting up the QuickTime synthesizer.

  29. Open PatchBay.  You should see the following:

  45. The single icon is a QuickTime input port.  Open an application that is configured ("MIDI Settings" or equivalent) for Apple's MIDI Manager.  Return to PatchBay.  It should look something like this:

  61. Make sure a line like the one shown connects your application's output port and QuickTime's input port.

  67. This demo version of MidiQT has certain limitations.  It will only play on MIDI channel #1 (using the numering convention 1-16).  Also, it will only play using Acoustic Grand Piano (instrument #1 of 1-128).

  69. A full version is available that plays 16 MIDI channels.  Also, it responds to MIDI Program Change messages to select any of the instruments included in QuickTime 2.0.  By convention, channel 10 is the drum channel.
